New York City, September 9-16, 2010Fashionistas in extremely dangerous high heels are literally tripping all over the city as New York Fashion Week currently hits its, uh, stride. This glorious event happens twice every year and brings the world’s finest and most cutting-edge designers together to display their latest creations. If youth culture has a face it’s a redheaded woman in her 60s wearing platform shoes, statement tees and corsets.
Everything about Vivienne Westwood is extraordinary. Her career, her specific and highly appreciated style – both as designer and icon – her younger years as seamstress and owner of the SEX! shop, Punk’s main shopping stop in London. Since the 1981 launch of her Ready-to-Wear line she’s introduced ”underwear as outerwear” as well as deconstruction, a beloved trend amongst It designers Rei Kawakubo and Martin Margiela. She has a rather unique do-it-yourself approach to style, her history of experimental looks include a chicken-bone T-shirt (bones stitched on to spell out the word Fuck), pants decorated with male genitalia, crinolines, corsets, horns, platform shoes… the list of over-the-top everyday wear could go on and on and – would someone else wear it, it might look a tad inappropriate. In the hands of Vivienne Westwood, any style is possible, she’s fashions old lady, a know-it-all with authority and an endless source of creativity.
